You can advance the static TDC a few degrees to match today's higher
octane rating.
1) Dwell is: Symmetric, 41-49; Asymmetric, 45-53; high lift 57-59, all
in degrees.
2) Max advance is controled by the position and size of the holes in
the advance plate. Unless of course the springs are too strong and the
weights don't reach max advance.
Did the advance plate have the correct advance stamped on it?
You could try setting the timing for max advance of 30 degrees while
running at 4500, and then check to see if the static timing of TDC is
correct.
