Mike,

Testing will require draining the coolant a bit to get it below the 
level of the temperature sender.  Once that is done, remove the sender 
and route it to a pan (or coffee can) full of water and place it on a 
camp stove.  Heat the water to boiling.  The gauge should read 1000C.  
If it doesn't, then you will need to send the gauge to Nisonger's 
<http://www.nisonger.com/> or John Wolfe Co. 
<http://www.tempman.qpg.com> for repair.  It is possible that the 
capaliary tube wound up being cracked and lost all the working fluid.
