In response to the query re what do other owners do re cruising speed
My 1953 TD has a stock engine that was sleeved to standard when it was
rebuilt about 25 or 30 thousand miles ago. The rear end is a 4.875.
Tires are 165RS15 rradials. Instruments have been rebuilt and are
accurate.
I personally kinda make 4000 RPM's somewhat of a redline and rarely turn
it much higher than that. A lot of my touring is on back roads here in
the Sierra Nevada foothills, although the car has been driven over ALL
of the Sierra Nevada mountain passes.
For flatland traveling I usually travel at 3800 to 3900 RPM's. That
puts me at about 57 to 58 miles per hour, which is good enough for me
with 50 year old brakes, suspension and steering.
