Lee,
To Lew's list of questions/suggestions, I would ask a question based on
your last statement "Installed electric fan. All that did was that if
he leaves it on when he stops after driving, it doesn't boil over."
Does the "boiling over" occure only after the engine is shut off?
Secondly, does your friend actually hear the cooling system boiling? If
the system only expells some coolant when the engine is shut down
without any actual boiling occuring, then this is perfectly normal.
Even if he hears the system boiling after shutdown, it is not
necessarily an indication of a problem. The convential wisdom is that
an engine/cooling system is not overheating as long as it is not boiling
while the car is moving. To eliminate the loss of coolant after
shutdown, tell your friend to install a coolant recovery system. He
should also try a new radiator cap to make sure that the pressure in the
system is held at the correct level.
Good luck - Dave
