  As soon as I receive the OK from NEMGT Register to type over the
copywrite-protected article that Chip wrote, I'll do so and everyone
interested can read it.
  Meantime, I'll cite more w/o quoting:
   Remove the fitting and inspect it. The inside should have a pein-over
(punch mark) that serves to retain the spring and the ball.  If it is
intact, then the spring and the ball should be inside the nipple. 
  You could rinse out the hardened oil/grease, and the stuck spring &
ball will probably return to their proper places.
