I have a MGB manual that goes up to 1972.  On page Nb.15 the
wiring diagram shows a two wire alternator.  According to the
index on page Nb.1, this diagram is for 1971-72 cars.

On the two wire alternator, the small brown wire is for the idot
light.  The large wire goes to the battery via the starter.

On the three wire alternator, the heavy brown wire goes to the
battery via the starter.  The lighter brown wire most likely
provides power from the battery to the alternator to energize it
when it first starts rotating.  The brown yellow goes to the
idiot light.
