Thanks to all for the suggestions on steering rack play. I finally got the nerve to remove the adjusting nut (I was afraid a big bad spring would jump out that I could not get back in.) It appears that the play in the rack is being caused by a collapsed spring. It measures .88 inches instead of the 1.025.
