Bob,
Aside from serving as a home for the strainer, the "canister" provides a 
small reservoir of oil for the oil pump to draw from during hard turns, 
accelaration and braking, when the bulk of the oil sloshes about, and might 
otherwise leave the oil pump sucking air.
