Geeeesh, why would you want to do that and deprive yourself of the pleasure
of a growly 1st gear, no 1st speed synchro, all those leaks, running out of
ratios after 4 gears? <grin>

I have heard there are "after market" transmissions available as
replacements for the original one installed at the factory. One is a
five speed conversion made by a company called Skyhood Engineering,
somewhere in Maine. Some say it is quite good. It is a complete kit
which comes with a rebuilt Nissan (Datsun) transmission. Does anyone
know the address/telephone number/e-mail address of Skyhood Engineering?
I would also be interested in any other transmissions that are
compatible with the TD and how well they perform.
