Wear of the thrust face inside at the top of the bushing in the housing.
The lower shaft can move up and down and acts like a little "pump". The
easiest fix is to remove the distributor, remove the gear, and to
install a washer between it and the body taking up all but about .005 of
the play you'll find there.   Jarl
