For information on what to use with all of the gasket products on the
market, the best thing that I did was to attend a Loctite seminar. These
are put on for automotive, general use, medical, and other applications.
Call Loctite at 800-562-0560, (in Canada 800-263-5043, Quebec & Ontario
areas 800-668-9866) to inquire when the next seminar in your area will
be. (Automotive or general use).
With that aside, the products that I use are Ultra-Grey, Copper
form-a-gasket sealant, PST #567 (pipe sealant with teflon, high
performance), and a threadlocker, either wicking grade 290, or low
strength 242, and permanent 262.
Paper and cork gaskets sometimes say to soak in water before
installation. I use the Ultra-Grey on all paper & cork gaskets. Coat
both sides of the head gasket with Copper form-a-gasket. Use the Pipe
sealant on all banjo bolts, as well as any bolt that goes into the head
or block water areas (water outlet, rear cover plate, water pump) as
well as the bolts going into the oil galley, and the galley end plugs.
Threadlock all other bolts and nuts.
The cork rear main bearing seal needs to be formed before installation.
As it will be going on a curved surface, if not formed, it will tend to
lift off of the rear cap, unless pressure is applied. To form the cork
gasket, select a round item (drinking glass, plastic container, etc.)
similiar in diameter to the rear main bearing cap. Rubber band the cork
gasket to the item (notched areas out) and let sit at least 24 hours
before installing onto the rear main bearing cap. When installing onto
the rear main bearing cap, you can place a little Ultra-Grey in the
recessed area, before laying the cork gasket in place.
