Chris, I was told during a visit to the factory at Abingdon in the early 70s
that the purpose was to stop oil from creeping out through the cast iron by
sealing the casting porosity. I've seen some engines that were "boiled" really
well at some past rebuild, not repainted, and that would literally "ooze" oil
through the sides in the area where the crank threw the most oil! I always used
that armature paint in the shop since that visit, and would recommend that every
rebuild includes the paint.
