Since my car was originally fitted with a petrol lift pump, I'm
planning on retaining it in spite of the period Marshall 87 beltdriven
blower that I've acquired. (Thanks Pip & Pete ! ) Does anyone know for
sure
if I can simply pump thorough the Petrollift and mount a pair of SU at
the
back?

Chris,

If you want to retain the Petrolift as a functional item, good luck! I
have found that with the newer reformulated gas there is not a high
enough specific gravity to keep the cork afloat. I've tried everything
including new cork, unvarnished cork, varnished cork. Nothing seems to
work. I've even tried making a hollow float out of 0.010" shim stock.

If you want to keep the Petrolift purely for cosmetic reasons, yes, you
can pump fuel through it. But be sure to seal the vent hole in the cap.
I put a HP SU pump on my J2 and forgot to plug the vent. I was shooting
a good 10 foot stream of fuel from the cap. Eventually, I gave up on the
whole idea and have now fitted an LP SU pump on the firewall.

Regarding blocks, I am just finishing up the resurrection of my J2 after
a block-smashing connecting rod did its expensive thing. I am now using
an older, but unused, aluminum casting. It was purchased from a private
party, so I don't know the original source. Obviously, no serial number
on the block and I plan to leave it that way. I'll let you know how it
works out.

Regards,
Lew Palmer
