Hello Terry,
Your dynamo for a N-type should be a Rotax AT174, which is the
bigger-diameter one.
It has the top-end made of aluminium, it has a tapered shaft-end on top and
the shaft-end on bottom is a bigger diameter than on Your DDS14, and the
gear is fixed by a nut instead a bolt.
But dont worry, many N-types nowadays are running with a DDS14, which is
original for K4s,P4s,
L4s and others. It brings the same output (9 amps) as the AT174.
The original AT174 for N-types is difficult and expensive to find, and a
DDS14 is still much more original, than one of the new copies made from VW
or other modern stuff !

Its a atvantage when Your gear has a slight press-fit, because from this
place often problems come.
The key You better fabricate individually, so that it fits perfect to both
the shaft and the gear.
The deep or shallow forks only differs in the angle of the arms, the centre
is the same I think.
When a fork is not high enough, I always use washers as a spacer.
Maybe You best remove some material on a lathe, to get enough thread for the
nut.

On the pinion shaft,You can find both. Sometimes taper sometimes paralell.
The taper-shafts
are more sought after.

Good luck,

Gerhard

My dnyamo is a Rotax, DDS14 made 10/31. This was supplied recently by Mike
Allison. Its been refurbished. The original dynamo was gutted adn used
only
to drive the cam. I presume a generator was mounted atop the valve cover
and
belted to the crank pulley. I've seen pictures of this arrangement.

Questions:
1. is the bottom gear a press fit? That would be the only way to get my
gear
onto this shaft. I see that the gear has threaded holes for jacking it back
off. Does anyone know the size of the key that goes here right off the top
of their heads?

2. The top of the shaft is not tapered on this machine. The non tapered
fork
that I have here looks like it will bottom out before much of the shaft
threads appear above it. Is this why there is a deep and a shallow fork
listed in BW catalog? Bob Rich, do you have the tapered fork that goes with
the verticle drive pinion shaft?

Cheers
Terry
