In your J2? It may not have left the factory with a painted ring, but
unless you have a very unusual J2, neither did it leave the factory with
a Bishop Cam steering box. (????)

The brass shoulder on the box in my J2 is painted, but that doesn't mean
it
was when it left Abingdon.
