Tom,
I remember researching this issue for my J2 when I was in England in 1983 -
1985. I just remember puzzling over this issue and coming to the conclusion
that my J2 (J2247) should have Rotax, but couldn't find one. So I went with
Lucas PLC. I did find one of those that had the supposedly correct face
markings (Summer, Winter, Side, Head) or was that (Off, On, Side, Head?)
The circuit in my copy of an original owners (shop) manual has a diagram
which seems to bear this out, and the text makes reference to a PLC switch
for the J2 models, as differentiated from the J1 models.
However, I not (yet) an expert on the PB, so I'll have to take your word on
it. You believe it should use a brown-faced Rotax switch with the spade key?

Hi Lew,
I agree on the time period you state for Lucas - Rotax takeover, but I also
think most MMM cars had Rotax PLC's. My PB is the 18th built and it had a
Rotax switch, and all the factory photo dash shots I've seen under
magnification have Rotax PLC switches. Can't tell what ALL the cars had, but
I generally use Rotax. The PB factory photo car (PB0251) also had Rotax.
I know an electrical MMM guy in England thinks it should only be Lucas on
MMM cars and it should be the high - low charge system rather than OFF and D
S H but I don't see how that can work with the cutouts MMM cars use. And I
have NEVER seen a Lucas HIGH - LOW PLC (TA style) switch in brown for Ps and
Ns. So I'm sticking with the ROTAX switches, black or brown.
