Gentlemen
We have our MG PA engine in pieces for reconditioning and I'm lightening
the flywheel: the engine response has always seemed a bit ponderous, and
a Phoenix crank and new rods aren't going to help this any.
So far I've machined 4Kg off the flywheel, bringing it down to about
7Kg. I've followed the (reputedly) factory drawing published a few years
ago in the MMM Yearbook. This takes an annular section about 1" X 1 1/4"
out of the engine face of the wheel. When the clutch is fitted this
means that the the assembly will be down to 11.3Kg, from 15.3KG.
I could turn another 1/2Kg off the extreme periphery of the flywheel: is
that too much or not enough? My #guess# is that it's quite OK to do
that, but I've only got one flywheel!
My question: is there a rule of thumb or other means of determining how
much mass is needed for the flywheel? Or can someone offer direct
experience of the matter?
