Between the taper talk and the wet weather I turned down an alignment tool I 
needed out of 1" steel rod, using the move-the-tailstock method. It went pretty 
well but the chuck wore into the shaft pretty aggressively and required 
frequent tightening, due to the flexing the mis-alignment created. BJ in the 
Bean (very poor amature machinist)
