Keith, I can't see any reason not to run an alternator either, but FWIW, In Nov.
when I went to the SEMA show in Vegas I went by MSD to get an answer to that
very question. I was told that the 6AL box (which I run) would operate at peak
performance as long as the voltage was ABOVE 10 Volts! MSD said to fully charge
the battery in the pits, use the truck battery to start the car on the line, and
as long as the battery is in good shape it will hold 12+ volts for the run.
(mine does) My Optima can sit 6 months & still hold that voltage. Still, I wish
I had the room up front for an alternator. I thought of running one off the
driveshaft but that is complicated by the fact that it runs in a C-channel. I
just bought a gage from MSD that will tell me if my voltage is too low for
optimal ignition performance. It is designed fo non-alternator cars only..
