Gene Burkland has done the 500 plus mph spin testing for the Mickey Thompson
land-speed tires now available for LEASING for a five year period after
which they must be returned to the manufacturer. Call him for information.
Firestone was the only tire manufacturer interested in salt flats racing in
the early fifties and they maintained a tent facility on the salt each
August to mount and spin balance their tires. Their Bonneville tires,
purpose developed for salt flats racing, had almost a ninety degree cord
angle and were dipped in rubber rather than being built up like street tires
with a heavy tread layer. Al is running 35 year old Firestone tires that
have come from places like Alaska, Washington, California and I believe
Colorado. You'll have to ask him.
The Hot Rod Magazine archives would have the information on Firestone
