I like to do the "Throw over" adjustment on a live battery which=0Ainsur=
es that the diaphragm is in the correct hole location (4 or 5=0Aback). E=
nergizing the unit insures it is correct for the=0Apoint/diaphragm lengt=
h position. =0AThen viewing that photo as was sent with more rust than d=
esired, I=0Afeel that one of the most important items in the rebuild is=
the cap=0Aseal. Usually missing or rotted but friction tape would subst=
itute if=0Anecessary. It keeps water out of the critical electrical part=
s=0Aconstantly slopping at it under the wheel well. Additionally, Moss=
=0Asupplies a paper SU seal cover to finish the look. SUs forever! Hank=

until there are no=0Aor hardly any black spots visible and finish the s=
urface with 1200=0Awet&dry. Set the gaps at 0,9mm and 2,8mm. If the valv=

domed covers.=0AWhen separating the coil housing from the pump body mak=
e sure you do=0Anot tear the thin white mylar layer of the three layer d=
iaphragm. If=0Athe original diaphragm is intact keep it and do not use a=
modern=0Areplacement. I have rebuilt many pumps with diaphragms over 60=
years=0Aold that are still in pristine condition. I have rebuild well o=
ver a=0Ahundred pumps and rarely see deteriorated diaphragms and the one=
s that=0Aare faulty usually had the thin mylar layer damaged. Carefully=
loosen=0Athe three layers, clean with brake cleaner and let dry thoroug=

reduce=0Afriction and binding.=0A=0A If the Bakelite top or the bridge=
is cracked or even broken you can=0Aeasily fix that using Araldite or s=
imilar. The bridge can easily crack=0Awhen the screws are turned down to=
tight.=0A=0A These pumps are utterly reliable when used regularly and c=
an last=0Awell over 100.000 miles on a set of points and even then it us=

corrosion forming during storage. Before installing one=0Ashould always=
run a bit rough carton followed by flower paper 1200=0Athrough the poin=

3000,=0Ahas done well over 250.000 miles since 1974 on two cars. It was=
not in=0Ause between 1985 and 2008 bar a yearly start up. I transplante=
d it=0Afrom my first J-H to my present one (from the US) which had a mod=
ern=0Apump installed when I bought it. Most parts are still original=0Ai=
ncluding the (re-polished) points but I did add a transil a few years=0A=
ago and renewed the cork seal under the large dome as the cork was a=0Ab=
it crumbly.=0A=0A On various official SU sites you can find an excellent=
description of=0Ahow to rebuild and set up these pumps. There are also=
some good=0Arecordings on You Tube however there are also some that are=
absolute=0Acrap and do not give any description of how to properly set=
up the=0Apumps.=0A=0A When adjusting the diaphragm you should officiall=
y turn back the=0Adiaphragm 4 holes. It is sometimes necessary to turn b=
ack 5 or 6=0Aholes. Start with 4 and if the pump is not starting up part=
dismantle=0Aand turn another one or two holes.=0A=0A If need be the ori=
ginal points pumps can be repaired "en route". The=0Asolid state pumps c=
annot.=0A=0A The solid state SU pumps can be temperamental. Some last fo=
r ever=0Awithout fail but others just give up or won't start up at all.=
They=0Aare also difficult to set up reliably if they need attention. Th=
e=0Aculprit seems to often be the small plastic bush in the coil housing=
=0Athat is meant to guide the shaft on the diaphragm. This bush can sink=
=0Aout of sight ending up near the diaphragm.=0A=0A The similar plastic=
replacement SS pumps from New Zealand under=0Avarious brand names seem=
very reliable and cheap.=0A=0A Important is that you fit the pump in th=
e car with the outlet facing=0Aupwards!!=0A=0A Some of you have fitted t=
he AZX1307 which is for an MGB. It will work=0Afor normal driving but as=
its delivery pressure is lower than the=0AAZX1308 it may not do for spi=
rited driving. These two pumps are=0Aidentical bar the conical spring on=
