True, but still hard to ignite the fuel in the cylinders with the plugs
removed. But not impossible, I suppose.

You are probably correct saying it may not strictly be necessary to shut
own petrol supply because of the float bowls needle valves, however I
till shut off the petrol line towards the carbs whenever I want to
rank the engine without firing it. Even with the plugs out there will
e some airflow through the carbs sucking in petrol.
