Second the motion on the small MIG welders, they are fantastic!    Once you 
have one, you'll wonder what you did without it.
 
The others suggestions were right on the money, with one additional  hint.
Look for a welder that the polarity can be reversed on, this is often very  
helpful when welding thin metal, like Healey fenders.
You also might want to make sure the model you buy can accomodate a change  
to aluminium (different wire, so different liner, etc).
Also, buying a gas setup (shielding gas) with it will make you very happy  in 
the long run.
