Coils with Ballast

I think the ballasted coils are actually six volt. They are wired up to put the 
full 12volt across for starting. Then when the starter motor stops, the supply 
is switched through the ballast resistor to provide six volts to the coil for 
normal running.
 
If you run a ballast type coil all the time without the resistor, it will burn 
out very quickly.
