I've not seen this error before but the cause you found
seems correct.  The software always looks for a dongle,
which means searching the parallel ports.  If it were to
fail to find a port, that would be a fatal error, and the
program would crash.  If it does find the port, it then
tests for the dongle to decide whether to run in full or
demo mode.

THANKS for finding this, I would have been rather
flummoxed!  But your answer seems right to me!
