I left out an important question.  We typically add extra clearance on #4.
With a proper coating the need may go away, but if the coating wears to fit=
.

I also wonder how it works with liners.  Even with using boring plates, I
suspect that the custom machined liners clamp down just a little bit
differently when we bolt on a head and the perfect bore we were after may
change. Nothing will change for the rings but the piston to bore clearance
may be perfect.
