I just had the starter and generator rebuilt at a shop that has been in
business since the sixties. ?They turned the commutator on the generator and
filed down the material ber ween the copper blades. ?They did not have the
brushes in stock, so the cut a pair that were close. ?It was CP Generator in
Rialto here in SoCal.Mike MacLean

The auto electric shop I deal with does not recommend turning the commutator
because, at the age of our cars, the copper is very fragile.

The starter is powerful enough. A proper rebuild is all it needs. A good
clean of the commutator on a lathe and new brushes should bring back the
strength. Also new bearings will help.
