I forgot to hit "Reply All". I was curious on comments from the list
regarding the power loss due to not porting the inlet and exhausts versus
doing the work on the combustion chambers after having the head milled.

Is there a water passage right above that part of the head and if so about
how thick is the material in that area to be welded? If it's pretty thin in
that area due to milling the head I'd think it'd be a pretty tough job
welding it up. Sort of like trying to weld or braze sheet metal when it's
partially rusted and not much metal left I'd think.

P.S. I've been looking at our spare heads and the intake ports all look
pretty smooth. The exhaust ports are rougher on the surface but no big
protrusions of "slag" from casting in them. Just milling a head, and
grinding the valves, if the seats are good, and I'd think you could get by
for the Mitty. I don't know how much power it would cost you by not doing
the full porting job but at least you could do the Mitty. It would seem
that the work in the combustion chamber per Kas's books would be more
important than the porting, but that's just a really uninformed guess on my
part! I'm sure there are others on the list that can better comment on
that.

I found the source of my "head gasket" leaks - a cracked head. It's
cracked around the inner circumference of where it meets the liner in
#4 cylinder.
Picture is here:

Is this something that can be fixed, or should I start brushing up on
my head porting techniques and build another head?
Thanks, Tony Drews
Hoping to make the Mitty still...
