I agree with the enclosed-trailer crowd to a point, but my one devil's
advocate remark is: Of all of the race rigs that have been stolen, how many
of them have been open trailers? In my experience, that number is zero.
Enclosed trailers are thief magnets, unfortunately.
We haul on open trailers just because we don't have the money or space for
an enclosed, and it's less of a load on the tow vehicle, but I really don't
regret any of it except the obvious fact that the poor car is out in the
rain/road muck if the weather turns bad. We love the thumbs-up and
pressed-noses (okay, so we get them anyway, as we usually haul with a shiny
1984 Airstream motor home), and it's easy to get to the car at any point.
Our favorite trip was hauling back from the 2001 Breckenridge VTR with the
newly acquired Amphicar project on an open trailer. So many people were so
interested in the car I had to print a fact sheet on it in large letters
and tape it to the front door. I can't tell you how many people came
alongside the car and read the sheet (I was following in Brad's Spitfire,
so I had a great view)--there were LOTS.
Just take precautions in parking and securing your enclosed trailer and you
should be fine.
Just my 2 cents!
Keep Triumphing,
Susan :)
