There is no need for a polished surface. A flat surface is suitable. To test a
lifter you can test close to the edge of the bottom surface, outside the plain
where the cam is running on. I made thousands of hardness test while I was
working at a company that is testing all sorts materials. Vickers was my
favorite but I had to do all the checking systems (Rockwell, Brinell) to
satisfy the rules.
