The problem is indexing the mill to the bottom of the cylinder. If they get
a little off the block will be slanted one way or the other and you'll blow
head gaskets. They are not likely to be too far off in the long
direction--it's relatively easy to set the mill up so that it is parallel to
the original surface, but side to side is short, and if they are off even a
tiny amount, or if the block surface was not that true to the cylinder
bottoms to begin with and they exacerbate it, then you can have trouble.
In other words, you need to go to a good shop that does a lot of wet sleeve
work. This is not a big problem with a typical modern engine.

I knew about Mordy's thinner gaskets and will order as needed. Thats
interesting about the deck of the block not being parallel to the bottom.
If that's true I wonder how the did the machining? When you use a boring
plate on top of the engine with the liners clamped in place the block is
sitting on a flat surface perpendicular to the boring head. That would tell
me the bottom is parallel to the top, or am I missing something?
