So my friend Mr. Yarwood tore down Peyote's motor yesterday and found some
odd stuff (I'm stuck working, so I don't get to play in the garage). First,
the pistons are kissing the head. I don't think I over-reved it--6800 is my
limit and I don't recall zinging any missed shifts. I've got a steel crank
and Carillo rods. I also found out we're running 89 MM pistons. I would have
sworn it was 87.5--I think my memory is slipping worse than I thought. They
aren't hitting hard, the rings are still free, but the carbon is crushed.
That's a mite too close I'd say. The bigger pistons also explain why I've
been needing race gas instead of my usual 92. Even though the heads been
lightly milled the compression is still up there--about 11-1 I think Bob
said.
The number three cylinder showed some funny bright spots about halfway
down--as if the sleeve had buckled inward, which is highly unlikely with
cast iron. The piston looked fine, no sign of seizure and the rings are
free.
Everything else looks lovely. It may be that the exhaust guides were not too
tight at all, but are getting extra hot for some reason. I'm at a loss to
explain all this. Any ideas or experience with this?
