I know the reason why and it's long winded. Has to do with thread face
engagement and expansion. I do it their way--make sure the stud threads
freely all the way to the bottom and back it off a quarter turn.

As long as we're on the question...head studs...when I purchased my set from
ARP, their instructions were to thread the studs into the block (with their
special thread sealant) only hand tight.

Do those of you with great engine building experience agree or do you
tighten them into the block in some additional way? Describe your process.
