Never heard of one breaking, but I suppose they do.  I haven't worried
about it 
-- they're not heavily loaded, nor do they move very much.  Still,
everything 
eventually fatigues...

My recommendation:  Don't bother unless
you're taking the distributor apart for 
other reasons.  If you have never
dismantled your distributor to check and 
lubricate the weights under the
breaker plate, you should do so.  Can't tell you 
how many cars I have found
with gummed up mechanical advance mechanisms.  
Replacing the springs at that
time wouldn't be a bad idea, although I have never 
done so.
