This is included as part of a "backroads tour" that I go on annually, and even
if coming from the south I'd encourage you to drive north to 166 and head
south along this route.
The scenery is terrific, and the twisties are enjoyable at any speed. (not
that I have tried at anything north of the posted speed limit....)
This would be in the category of a "vehicular sidebar",
(~ 60 mile route which will take ~ 2 hours, instead of 40 minutes along the
same 40 mile stretch of 101... or more like 25 minutes if you are driving with
Alvin),
but some of the most gorgeous roads to be found (and some nice wineries...).
All roads fully paved, in fact repaved in the last year or two, so gorgeous
surface.
For those looking to "pull the plug" once this route is taken, the alternate
once you do the left turn at #5 is to go 8.7 miles to Alisos Canyon Road, then
6.5 miles out to 101.
But, this misses some of the most beautiful (and recently repaved) roads thru
wineries and high end farms and horse ranches.
