Are you disengaging the reverse lockout lever with your left foot? The
little metal pad in the left corner of the floorboard.

Just noticed something funky with the 4 sp tranny in my 1600 roadster.
Every so often, it won't go in reverse. The stick won't even move over
to that position. A little jiggling, and I can usually make it work,
but I'm wondering what causes this and what the fix is. Anyone know?
