As Joe stated, I have used a slide hammer. I simply removed the sheet metal
screw on the end of the hammer (for threading into a pre-drilled hole on a
body panel and then popping the dent out), found a bolt that screwed into the
hole on the main cap that is there (or is on a U20), literally duct taped the
bolt tightly to the hammer with the head of the bolt against the housing that
holds the sheet metal screw for support, and slide hammered it off... worked
great!

I made a very simple puller for this, out of a scrap piece of angle iron,
drilled 3 holes in it, middle hole was for a bolt to go into the cap, the
other two got long threaded bolts with nuts under the angle iron. Took 5
minutes to build and worked like a charm. I think big box auto parts stores
also rent pullers, if that is your preferred course of action. I've also
seen a slide hammer used, worked fine also.

As I recall, and was mentioned by another lister, that rear cap has a
threaded hole in it. That's to allow a bearing cap puller to be threaded
in and used to pull the cap off.
This is one of those times when the right tool is really handy. You
won't use it often, but it'll avoid the potential for a lot of damage.
If you try something similar, be certain you don't screw anything into
the cap deep enough to hit the crank :-)
