This is reminiscent of the Motorcycle helmet issue. DOT and SNELL are the 2
main certifiers, Snell being a "higher" standard in most testing. It's been
shown in study after study that a SNELL approved helmet works better in a
multitude of situations that one would encounter in a motorcycle accident. But
the US DOT continues to use an antiquated (and in my opinion very unlikely to
occur) type of impact test as the standard of approved or not approved.
And so the SNELL helmets, which are by far superior in every way, (and the
standard for use in Europe and Asia), do not satisfy the law (or insurance
companies) in the U.S. in places where helmet use is mandatory.
It's a little ridiculous that it is so difficult and expensive to get something
approved for the road. We miss out on ALOT of great products in the US, simply
because of the litigious nature of our society.
