The short answer to your question is yes.  The right answer will most likely
require that you pull the head because it will be hard to put the timing
chain cover back on without an oil leak between the head and timing cover.
Maybe being forwarned about the head gasket damage that may be done while
putting the timing cover on will allow you to figure out how to avoid the
damage and the oil leak.

Group, a friend of mine has a u20 and wants to replace the timing chain.....
Now the question, can the timing chain be replaced without pulling the head,
Taking for granted that the oil pan is dropped and the front timing
cover removed.
