also work here.

When you look at the Parts Catalog, it clearly shows the shock body at the
bottom and the shaft at the top.
It also shows a dust boot over the shaft to protect the shaft from the crud
you describe.
I'm guessing that the dust boots don't survive for long!
Do your KYB's come with a dust boot?
If not, I suggest that the boots are now redundant and crud is of no
consequence.
Also, the shock valving might only work correctly when the body is at the
bottom.

I have a question that needs to be answered.
When installing front shockies, does the shaft go up or down? I have 2
roadsters and they are both different. I am installing KYB's and if
installed so you can read the label it is shaft up, but with this way
wouldn't all the road grime get stuck in the seal and wear this out. Shaft
down would mean no grime would effect the seal.
The mind ponders?????
