Despite the glaring inconvenience of the laws of conservation, the adage
so often thrown about by Bob Heinlein, "There Aint No Such Thing As A
Free Lunch", rings true in this case as well. Electric cars owned by
less than 10 percent of the population, spread out over the face of the
nation works fine, but let's concentrate that mass.

The daily energy usage of a metropolis (Think Los Angeles), in vehicle
motion is a phenomenal pile of calories. That energy has to be
replenished. Whether you fill up at the pump, or plug it in, makes
little difference in the total energy usage You did this much work, You
expended this much energy.

Guess what.. You city's electric power grid is already taxed to it's
limit (think summertime brown-outs), Now you throw the addition load
once taken up by the internal combustion engine at point of use, and you
gots troubles.
