I replaced the alternator in Mr. Hyde with a GM alternator because the
output of the original alternator was erratic. I am fairly sure the
alternator was dead because it was not charging at the end, but when it was
working, the ammeter would oscillate from 0 - 30 amps. Replacing the
regulator did not help the ammeter much.
Now I have a 63 Amp GM single wire alternator installed and it seems to be
working, but the ammeter is still oscillating from 0 - 30 amps at different
RPM ranges. Adding the headlights to the load helps stabilize the ammeter
needle quite a bit, as it did with the original alternator.
The output of the new alternator is connected to the original alternator
high current connection so that the ammeter will work. I have a 30 amp fuse
installed in series with the alternator output to protect the ammeter and
other wiring.
I am beginning to suspect a poor connection in the old wiring somewhere, but
wonder if anyone has seen this one before.
