The early 240z came with a four speed gearbox that had a separate
bellhousing. The early 240z bellhousing shares the same bolt pattern as the
2000 five speed gearbox. I have read that the five speed gearbox was
considered a "dealer installed option" from a few dealerships, but I have
no more details than that. Nismo still lists the bellhousing in their
catalog, I think the price listed was $385 US. I have two of these 240z
bellhousings that I got by carefully trolling eBay for cheap 240z gearboxes
that feature the removable bellhousing. Then buying the whole transmission
and having it shipped. It usually costs about $75 US to ship one of these
via UPS.
I have also found hints of information on the internet that it is possible
to bolt one of the z or zx five speeds to the 1600R motor. The process
involves the bell/gear housing from a five speed datsun 210 and installing
the z car gears and tailshaft housing. I have been researching the swap,
but I don't have any of my notes with me now.
