Hey Eric ,

I saw your posted question .Always replace servo syncros when the trany
is disassembled !
Well maybe not ,only if you had to go back into it for some reason with
low mileage on them :-) .
These syncros are a friction band operation and thus are always wearing
out .Use synthetic gear oil
after break-in ( 1000 miles or so ) on dinosaur oil for much longer life
. Nissan went to the Brass
syncros for a reason ,Longer life ! The steel type when in good shape
,will work much better ,
especially at high RPM shifting and therefore were used in the Datsun
Racing 5 speeds .

On your engine ,you probably have or could have valve issues also .
Zero and low compression
readings are more likely a valve problem . Did you do a wet test when
testing compression ?
This is also an important test when low compression readings are found .
When reworking the head correctly ,Always on valve jobs and rebuilds ,
REPLACE the Intake seats ! The brass seats pound out , ( valves will be
sunk in head even
more after a valve valve job .Anybody that knows anything about Datsun
/ Nissan engines
can confirm this .We replaced heads under warrantee at the Datsun
Dealers back in the late
70's when intake seats started falling out .This was on very low
mileage engines .
Nissan gave up on Brass seats and went to steel on the 1976 280 Z's and
the 4 cylinder L-series and A-series engined cars and trucks followed in
1978 .
Also note that Every .010 to .015 the seat is lowered into the valve
pocket will result
in approx 4-5 hp LOSS , ) and are NOT good to use with Unleaded fuel
( Remember good old Leaded fuel when your car was made ?) . So get good
seats installed with
a good 3-4 angle valve job ,with the valves at the correct height and
pick up performance ,not loose
it .
