Holes

Hi gang,  another newbie question.
Upon taking the time to explore my car a little last weekend, I find 2 large
holes in the firewall above where the hoses go into the heater core, and below
the hood latch.   They had been taped over at some point in her history.  What
is supposed to go through these holes.  The certainly look factory made.
Thanks again for all the replies about my tranny.  I have a couple of feelers
out to find a good transmission repair shop in the area.
