It's fine to drive it the way it is just try to take it easy and slow when
shifting. BTDT

Yes, the motor has to come out too and the tranny needs to be rebuilt. You
MUST check your countergear shaft and the bearings as they all go bad after
about 50,000 miles if not sooner. They aren't hard to rebuild but if you're
not mechanically inclined have someone do it.

I hazard to guess that the speedo gear inside the tranny is shot. It's
plastic v metal inside. You can probably fix it with the tranny in the car
but why waste your time as the tranny will have to come out sooner or later.
Sometimes the speedo gear assembly is a *itch to get out.
