I remember when I lived in LA in the 70s I almost fell on the floor when my
roomate, who worked for the So Cal AAA, told me what it would cost to
register my NY car which was a 71 240Z. I don't remember the amount but it
was at least 4x what I paid in NY.
Since it appears to be a 'fee' you can't deduct it on your taxes. Some
states 'tax' your car and you can write off the taxes paid.
BTW, I got a lot of tickets in CA for driving too fast :) After I moved back
to NY I received a letter from CA telling me there was a warrant for my
arrest and they would impound my car if I didn't pay the fines. Screw'em, I
never paid them. The statute of limitations has long since passed so I'm
safe if I go back - unless of course, if CA ranks traffic infractions right
up there with murder!
