My 2000 had similar symptoms about a month ago, turned out to be the
fuel filter was full of crud.

Subject: What pushes the Fuel pump lever?
I've looked at the diagrams from the parts manual, but I can't
see what activates the lever on the fuel pump. Is there a cam?
Is it under oil? If I take off the fuel pump, will oil start to pour
out?
I'm having trouble reving the engine over 3000rpm. It revs
fine when sitting, but when moving, holding the accelerator
in makes the engine sputter alarmingly. I get the idea that
the fuel pressure is weak. Sometimes it accelerates smoothly
though. This all means that keeping freeway speed is
nerve-racking, sometimes it won't go over 50mph in 4th,
sometimes I get up to 70mph with no problems.
I'll probably take the car to Mike in SF again, he did a fast
job of replacing my front calipers, tightening the rear brakes
and removing the smog pump and air gallery. I had the exhaust
replaced as well because there was something that looked
suspiciously like a catalytic converter in line, sitting right
under the driver's seat. It is highly possible that it was a last
ditch attempt by a PO (or clueless exhaust shop) to get it
to pass California Smog.
Mike even recognised my car as one he'd seen 10 years
and 2 POs earlier. It was silver at the time, now red, and
I'm still replacing rubber that has overspray from the too-
cheap job whomever did on it.
