The consensus I got was that you normally only need to replace the lower
bushing and the seals. The upper threaded bush normally has a fair amount
of play in it and it can't - as far as I can tell - be pressed out. It
would have to be drilled out. Then of course you have to replace it - all
in all not worth the effort. The lower bush can be cut - slit lengthwise -
with a hack saw blade and then can be beaten out with a punch. The new one
will need to be pressed in which turns out to be more work than you'd think.
Once it's in, it will have to be honed to fit the idler shaft. I did it
with a drill and a brake cylinder hone but I'll never do that again as it
literally took days. I can't believe my drill still works. Best to have a
machine shop press it in and hone it to size. It should be very tight on
the idler shaft as it will wear quickly at first. As long as the Idler
shaft isn't too badly pitted it can simply be cleaned up and re used. if it
is badly pitted, your options are to grind it to an undersize diameter and
have a shop make a bronze bushing for it or to have the shaft cut undersize
and then hard chrome plated back to it's stock diameter.
The lower bushing costs about $12 US as I recall.
Dean used to rebuild them for $75 as long as the idler shaft wasn't too
pitted but he said that he's not doing that anymore. I can understand why.
If you can find someone to fit that damn bushing for $75 it's money very
well spent.
