Man it is a mess. If (it's always if) the engine was still in the car, I'd
tow it to the nearest coin car wash and spend $10.00 there. Everybody who's
seen my cleaning operations have been impressed, except for my neighbors!
Engine/driveline/engine compartment cleaning at home will cause a major
slick on your street and not make you a popular guy. Gunk works pretty good
but you still need to apply considerable amounts of the elbow grease to
really cut the road oils that over time turn into black concrete reinforced
with sand. It's NOT a one time process. first you'll clean the loose stuff
off, then the heavier deposits and then again. If your going to paint your
engine or compartment while it's out, after all the Gunk cleanings, you'll
need to do it again with soap and water to cut the Gunk residues

Now with the engine and transmission out of the car, I find myself faced
with lots of grease/oil/gunk/dirt etc on the engine, transmission, frame,
etc. I guess 35 years worth of build up. Anyone have a recommendation on
what to use to remove this stuff? I'm trying to stay fairly neat about
this process and want to remove most of the crud from the outside before I
start tearing into the inside.
